What does Applied Ecosystem Ecology mean?
It means that we are using ecological principles to research, explore, and respond to the most pressing issues on the Earth today – climate change, biodiversity loss, and habitat degradation. In doing so, we work to ensure that our solutions have net positive impacts for communities in which we work. We believe that some of the best solutions are based on restoring healthy ecosystem processes.
Welcome to our Website!Hello everyone! My name is Deborah McGrath and I would like to welcome you to my website! As you navigate this site you will learn about all the great people I work with and the exciting projects we are working on!
As an Applied Ecosystem Ecologist, I focus on restoring biogeochemical processes to address global environmental challenges. My studies include the impact of payment for ecosystem services on afforestation, carbon sequestration and agroecosystem resiliency in Haiti and constructed wetlands to remove and recycle pollutants from wastewater in the southeastern U.S. and in China. If you are a current (or prospective) student at Sewanee, I would love to get to know you! Please do not hesitate to reach out if you want to learn more about my work - or even better - if you want to get involved! I have been directing both individual and collaborative research for undergraduate students for over a decade. Many of my former student are now researchers themselves - at universities, state agencies, NGO's, and private firms. It is my greatest privilege to see students succeed, both academically and personally. -Deborah McGrath, PhD |
